How to prevent cracking crash cymbals?
I’ve been playing drums for about 7 years now and I go through about 2 crashes a year. I am a serious drummer and I only buy top of the line cymbals, so needless to say this has put a huge burden on my wallet. I would like to hear tips on how to prolong the life of a crash cymbal.
It really depends on how your cymbals are cracking. If they’re cracking around the hole in the bell (key holing) that means that your cymbals are too tight on your stand. Take a pair of scissors and trim a 1/4″ off one of your felts and that should relieve that problem. If your cymbal is cracking around the edge it could mean that your hitting the cymbal wrong. When striking a cymbal you should be using a sweeping motion with your stick. Try hitting your cymbals more to the side rather than straight down in the middle. And lastly, adjust the angle of your cymbal if your cracks are occurring in the lathe pattern. Try leveling out your cymbal so it isn’t tilted as much.
If you think that your technique isnt the problem maybe its the cymbals your buying? I’ve found that the best sounding cymbals are usually the thinnest as well. Zildjians A Customs and K Customs and Sabians HHX and AAX lines all sound beautiful but seem to crack easier. I havent played on many Paiste cymbals so I cant give an honest critique on those. You may want to do some research into different cymbal lines that can handle more punishment. Sabians Xs20 line sounds good, isnt too expensive, and can handle LOTS of abuse for example.
As final note, you should be buying all your cymbals from Guitar Center. They offer an extended warranty on most gear sold including cymbals called the Performance Guarantee. If your cymbal cracks in under 2 years time Guitar Center will cut you a check for the amount you spent on the cymbal NO QUESTIONS ASKED. That way if your a heavy hitter you can still get new cymbals every year for free basically. Hope this helps.
